Mrs. Sagili Sudharani is awarded with Ph.D (Full-time, Regular) from the Department of Folklore and Tribal Studies of Dravidian University for her Thessis titled “The Folk Narrative of Diasporic Telugu Women in Tamilnadu”. She did her research under the guidance of Prof. Pulikonda Subbachary (Former Dean of Academic Affairs and present Chairman of BOS). She analyzed the life of Diasporic society reflected in the folk narrative, particularly how women gave a vent to their feelings in their narrative which are narrated in various social and religious contexts. The research is totally depended on first hand material collected from field. She did field research in, around 200 hundred villages of 16 districts of Tamilnadu taking from Kanyakumari to Krishnagiri districts. The research received a high ranking remarks from the experts and experienced researchers.
The Telugu Diaspora in Tamil Nadu is having a long history. Telugus settled there from the time immemorial. Many folk songs and folktales revealed the nature of their migration and the history of various castes in this process is care fully analysed in this book.
Incidentally it happens to be the first Ph.D that is awarded from the Department. Shortly this book is going to be published.
I am a senior journalist of Mysore (Karnataka). My ancestors are from Andhra and we belong to Mulakanadu Brahmins. After their migration to Mysore (may be Srirangapatna or Nanjangud), they became the Gouri Purhoits to the Mysore royal family. I have traced their association with the Palace during Gouri festival to the previous five generations. Since I am interested about my ancestors and writing a book in Kannada, any information about the 'Gouri' family will be useful from your end. Pl. do let me know if some material can be sourced on our ancestors viz., Gouri family in Andhra. My e-mail id: gourisatya@yahoo.com/gourisatya@rediffmail.com

Sir-I am a native of Coimbatore, belonging to Telugu speaking Kamma Naidu community. Currently I live in Chennai. As you may be well aware, the Naidu community forms a significant portion the total pupulation in Coimbatore region.
ReplyDeleteI have been interested in tracing the roots of the community through various means, mostly unsuccessfully, apart from a few one-line references in the print media in 80 and 90s, that too because of the large contribution made by this community to the overall development of the Coimbatore Region.
This community follows a culture that is quite unique and consistant among the 100+ groups within it (they call it KULAM) such as Bandiyar, Sennar, Nangillar etc. All these KULAMs will have a "brotherly" or "uncle" relation with any other KULAM. Wedlocks can happen only with "uncle" kulams. In marriages and funerals the "brother" group and "Uncle/brother-in-law" groups have distinctive roles to play. Even there are a few ceremonies carried out for the girl children at the age of 7 or 9 or even at 11 on the full moon day of Tamil month Aavani in their temples, which can not be seen in any other community. These functions are known as "UDDAPINA SEER" and "PAINTESETHI". There are various songs of a typical nature sung by the elderly women on these occasions. Now-a-days, administrators of some of these temples have documented these processes and songs to preserve them and cascade to the new generation.
I have read about the works of Dr Sudharani in today's The Hinhu and got fascinated by it immediately. I woulk like to know more about our history and also, I would be more than happy if the material (the books etc) I have can be of any use to the research. I can be contacted at kanakaraj_r@ymail.com.
Dear sir, you may contact Dr. Sudharani at sudharani995@gmail.com and have discussion.
